The Good
A step closer to a global ban on endosulfan
Earlier this month, India continued to fight a global ban on the deadly pesticide endosulfan and was the only member to vote against it during the fifth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee in Geneva. After a heated debate, the Committee members (including France, Burkina Faso, Republic of Korea, and Honduras) reached a decision that endosulfan is sufficiently dangerous to humans and the environment that global action is warranted. EJF has campaigned for a ban on this pesticide since 2001 and this is an important break-through for endosulfan, and means the pesticide has progressed one step closer to a global ban.
The Bad
EJF expose major loopholes in international law being exploited by illegal 'pirate' fishing operations
Pirate fishing, driven by a growing unsustainable global demand for seafood, is now threatening the future of world fisheries. A new EJF report reveals how illegal 'pirate' fishing operations are using 'Flags of Convenience' to hide their operations, stealing from poor nations and causing massive environmental damage. It is in our power to stop these pirates and central to the steps we can take is a ban on Flags of Convenience. Download EJF's report and see our recommendations for action.
The Ugly
Business as usual while children slave on
Whilst the world's leading cotton stakeholders sat in the comfort of Tashkent at the International Cotton Fair, early reports from investigators indicated that thousands of Uzbek children were working in poor conditions, hand-picking cotton. Contrary to promises by the Uzbek government and in a stark contrast to children at school across the UK looking forward to half term, children in Uzbekistan will be lining the pockets of Uzbekistan's elite, rather than broadening their horizons as you can see from this recent photo. Read below to see how you can help EJF defend the environment and human rights in the cotton industry.
Here's a reminder of some of the ways you can help us fight for environmental justice:
1 minute - Send the online letter calling for the Indian Government to support a global ban on the deadly pesticide endosulfan.
5 minutes - Register for the Santa Run in aid of EJF - What is it? 2,000 people dressed in Santa Suits running, walking, skipping 5km around Greenwich Park to raise money for charity this Christmas, we're already registered, are you?
1 hour - Download our free report 'Lowering the Flag on Pirate Fishing'. Read it. Talk about it. Share it with your friends and colleagues.
At lunch - Host an EJF designer organic cotton campaign t-shirt sale at your work or college and get your friends and family really wearing their heart on their sleeve.
5 days - Adventure Challenge 2010! Sign up to EJF's Great Fashion Cycle, the London to Paris bike ride that is set to make a real 'fashion statement' about ethics and cotton next summer.
Thank you.
