THE CHRISTMAS PARTY LIST: A.K.A JUDGEMENT DAY.
I have been lumped with the loathsome task of putting together the music for our forthcoming festivities. After attending too many parties where someone has optimistically put their iPod on shuffle only for it to break into a Guardian podcast to think of this as an option, I have spent the last couple of days trawling through Spotify reminiscing, seat dancing, and noting. In short, I’ve been making a list and checking it twice.
The party playlist is an unenviable job; if it’s good, people will, for at least the duration of that party, think you’re ok. But if it ain’t, if you think that Wham never went and that ‘Christmas tunes’ are a legitimate lullaby then you will be marked out, a light shone on you by your peers that will not dim by the time January rolls around. It is this fear that has lead me to piping up during conversations about the many global crises and the future of food – “do we think that Ray Charles can really be trusted, I mean, If you heard him at a party would he make you happy?”
